Question:

Where to get a peak flow meter for my asthma?

I need to control my asthma and wanted to moniter it with a peak flow meter, BUt where do I buy one? I went to CVS to get my prescriptions filled and they had no idea where to get one?
Does any one use one and does it help prevent asthma attacks?

Answers:

OK , you can ask your doctor for one they are free on prescription or if you go to a chemist you can but one i know that BOOTS deffinatley sell them all good chemists should.

I have been using a peak flow meter for years and my advice is to get your asthma nurse or doctor to make sure you have the correct technique as if you don't your results maybe lower than what they are.
You can see what your predicted peak flow should be on .http://www.peakflow.com/top_nav/normal_v...
From knowing what your normal reading should be you can then see what your asthma is like, it often helps doctors see if your asthma is being controlled, you may like to record these values it is best to do it x2 a day for good reading ( morning and night as this is when asthma is normally at its worst) , as for preventing an asthma attack the simple answer is no, a peak flow will help you gage what you lung capactity is but that is only half of the story you also have to go on how YOU feel there have been plenty of times that i have had a normal reading and feel completely rubbish and wheezy ... and other times i feel fine but my reading is low ... if you feel rough tight chested wheezy then go and see a doctor DON'T rely on you peak flow alone!!
