He's been diabetic since 16 months, so it's not like he even remembers what it was like to eat "normal" without the carb and sugar counting!.!.!.he just knows he doesn't like any veggies and I'm starting to get worried about long term health issues!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have a child who has had diabetes since she was 2!. She is 18 now!.
At first, I would cook these nutritionally balanced meals i!.e!. protein, veggies and a starch and being a two year old, she would throw her food on the floor !
Back in those days there was no humalog and so she had to take regular before eating!.
Since I has already dosed her, I had to get carbs into her so her punishment for throwing her food was ice cream !
Now with humalog, you can dose your son after he eats based upon what he eats!.
Continue to put veggies on his plate!.Small amounts , every day!.Eventually he will try them!.
Don't show him you are upset!.Don't even mention it!.And no punishments!. He still gets dessert and a snack before bed!.
I like the idea of having him "help" you with the veggies!.He can stir them[ not near any heat source] and put them on the plates!.He may be more invested in his food then!.
Good luck and try and relax!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Try not to stress about it, most kids don't like much in the way of veggies until they're 12 or so!. Try fruit instead and bolus him with insulin to cover it!. Even green veggies have carbs! Diabetes is about managing carbs, not eliminating them!. Have you tried adding a little cheese to things!? Broccoli or cauliflower with a little Velveeta or cheddar cheese is much more interesting to a kid!. And the cheese doesn't add any carb!. Also focus on giving him fiber in other ways!. Lower-carb fiber bars and Cheerios offer enough fiber to compensate for veggies!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

potatoes, carrots, corn, peas, dried beans, other root veggies are all very high glucose foods!. I never touch them myself, but do like french fries with ketchup!.

I love trees, both white and green and a good Ranch dressing dip!! Or he might be like my granddaughter and love the Raspberry vinegarette or the Red Wine vinegarette dressings!.

One thing! I positively hate the sour vinegary flavor of the fat free or fat reduced dressings!. I love having dip stuffs to snack on!. Cherry tomatos on tooth picks go with the trees very nicely!. And so do steamed brussels sprouts on toothpicks!. Lots of things taste better from the view point of having tooth picks in them and a dish of something to dip them in!.

Don't worry! 5 yr olds always get the "I hate Veggies", all of them do this!. It doesn't matter if they are diabetic or very very healthy!. They all go through the I hate Veggies, I don't like that! stage!. As mothers and grandmothers we have to live through that stage!. It is much harder as a grandmother to do it tho!! I want to pinch their little heads off when they haven't ever tasted a thing and state "I hate that! My mommy doesn't make me eat it"!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Although your child may initially think that all food originates in the super-market, having him join you there can be a very valuable lesson in choosing good foods and avoiding bad foods!. Start this practice at age 4 or 5 because he'll soon have to make his own food choices at school!.

If you have a little space in your backyard, plant a garden with your child!. Your child will be amazed to find out that he can start with one small plant and end up with boxes of tomatoes! If you don't have the space, go cherry picking or apple picking or some other fruit or vegetable picking so that your child realizes that food comes from the soil!.

Food is such a major part of diabetes care that it's essential that your child be able to cook for himself and prepare healthy food!. Letting your child help you cook has many benefits!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The great thing about vegstables is that they are healthy in any form!. I suggest that you get a food processer/blennder and start mixing cooked vegstables into the food that he does like!. For example if he loves meatloaf, add the shredded and mushed up veggies to the ingredients!. Try adding the liquid vegstable mix into all the ingredients you cook with!. That way he'll get the nutrients without "seeing" any vegstables!.
Also consider a children's multi vitamin supplement!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Some of the veggies I disliked a lot ever since I was very young it has turned out I have sensitivities to, including allergies (bell peppers, onions, celery, tomatoes, garlic)!. Others that were never my favorites but I would at least eat I have similar problems with these days like producing painful bloating and gas or diarrhea!. Who knows, maybe as a kid my body knew something was wrong with those foods!.

If the aversion to veggies is a new thing, it is not uncommon for children to suddenly decide they won't eat something, especially when it was once a favorite food (which just confuses the parent more)!. Trying to force them to eat it often turns into a bigger fight that lasts for years!. So long as he's getting adequate nutrition and fiber from others foods or supplements, I wouldn't be especially worried!. Try not to make it a daily fight, and just keep enjoying the veggies yourself and he will probably start eating them again!.

Some children and adults with various mental illnesses can fixate on vertain foods, colors, textures, etc either as something they have to have, or can not tolerate!. This can be short term or life long (my father-in-law as "issues" with pickles these days)!.

Starting a garden is a good idea, and he may really enjoy growing veggies, but still may not eat them (it didn't help me as a kid)!. Sneaking veggies into other things just made me distrust adults who prepared my meals (mother, aunts, school cafeteria workers)!. Being forced to eat some things (like carrots - my one aunt was BIG on carrots) just made me feel like I was being tortured for her amusement (I still hate fresh carrots, thanks to her, but I don't mind them in soups and stews)!.
