Has anyone had any reactions to MSG's in chinese foods?!

Question:

Has anyone had any reactions to MSG's in chinese foods?

Ok so the other day I had chinese foood my husband had the same thing I did. But a few hours later my stomach bloated up to the place where I could not wear any type of pants i had to lay on my side like i was pregnant. And now for the last two days i have had such severe diarreah that I am starting to get dehydrated. My doctor said I could be having a severe reaction to the MSG's that they might have put into the chinese foods. she said that they are not supposed to put it in the food any more. So has any one had this problems.

Answers:

Yes. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) does not have a taste of its own, and its exact flavor-enhancing mechanism is unknown, but it is believed to stimulate glutamate receptors in the tongue.

In 1995 the FDA acknowledged the existence of MSG System Complex and stated this may include:
- burning sensation in the back of the neck, forearms and chest
- numbness in the back of the neck, radiating to the arms and back
- tingling, warmth and weakness in the face, temples, upper back, neck and arms
- facial pressure or tightness
- chest pain
- headache
- nausea
- rapid heartbeat
- bronchospasm (difficulty breathing) in MSG-intolerant people with asthma
- drowsiness
-weakness

It is always possible, of course, you reacted to an ingredient other than MSG, but your physician is probably correct. MSG makes me ill also, but I get nausea, malaise, and an odd taste in my mouth.

A caution: Read the ingredients on all food products every time you purchase them. The FDA says if the product contains MSG, the label must say so. Even if you have used the same product for years, the manufacturer may begin using MSG in an attempt to enhance its flavor.
