Very far-fetched, but Epstein Barr Virus does cause lymphoma - particularly brain lymphomas in AIDS patients, and Burkitt's lymphoma!. and when you get those cancers, of course you waste away to nothing!.
Hepatitis B and C -- do cause chronic infections in the liver that can be incurable and sometimes cause wasting syndrome!.
