Question: Is yellow phlegm sign of infection!?
I always thought that if you cough up yellow it is a sign of infection!. Yet when I told the nurse she said that only green is a sign of infecition!. I have yellow phlegm and a cough so I asked for bloodwork and no infection was found!. They said I can try antibiotics but that it may not work since there is no infection!. I tried them got better and 3 months later I am back with phlegm and cough!?!?!?!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Phlegm will make you cough because that is your body's way of ridding itself of it!. Milk and milk products can thicken phlegm and make it thick and rubbery and hard to expectorate!. Postnasal drip can cause your problem as well as asthma!. Just because you have phlegm and a cough doesn't mean you should be taking antibiotics!. You can develop a tolerance to them and find yourself in trouble if you ever get pneumonia, the flu, or an infection!. Antibiotics are used to treat infections and not just cough and phlegm!. You would have gotten better without the antibiotics and I doubt they helped!. You may need sinus or allergy medication instead!. Phlegm from infection is always green!.

Another question was asked about phlegm and can be found at

http://answers!.yahoo!.com/question/index!?!.!.!.

Yellow is a sign of a common cold!. Green or brown is almost always a sign of infection!. Antibiotics do no good against a common cold so unless you read your info from WebMD, I'd quit diagnosing my symptoms and let the doctor do it!.

You can also go to wikipedia and search Phlegm for more info too!.
