5 year old son, asthma, flu jab problems at doctors.?!

Question: 5 year old son, asthma, flu jab problems at doctors!.!?
my son is 5 and has asthma, in the summer he had to go for a review and the doctor told me he would need his flu jab come the start of the school term in september, our doctors is highly over subscribed and getting an appoitment is very difficult, anyway nobody had got in touch about his flu jab so i phoned the doctors to enquire!.
The receptionist was very unhelpful and told me that i couldnt just phone up and ask for a flu jab, i had to sent for by the doctor, i told her it wasnt for me it was for my son and that the doctor had told me at his review that my son would need to have it!. She got very short with me at this point and said " what makes you (emphasis on the you) think that your son needs the flu jab!?" as soon as i told her he was asthmatic she couldnt get me off the phone quick enough, told me there was nothing in his notes, then all of a sudden there was something but it hadnt been followed up and the surgery was fully booked as far as the jabs are concerned for the next 8 weeks!.
This seems a long time considering he was supposed to have it around the start of the school term, he is currently under the doctor because the weather is having an adverse effect on his chest and his inhalers are not working well enough!.
When i was in town the other day i saw superdrug ofering the jab for

I know you said no links, but

It is the NHS flu Jab page
http://www!.nhsdirect!.nhs!.uk/articles/art!.!.!.

Then the next time you phone the receptionist you will know your rights
And can quote stuff, then you might get to speak to a Nurse or Doctor instead of being fobbed off by the receptionist

Flu jabs normally cover several strains of the virus, with the most likely ones in the Jab!. -- I think it should be the same injection on offer from your doctor and the Chemist!.

The Jab can be give by the Practice Nurse as well as the Doctor!.
You son should be able to get it easily, Many doctors surgeries have Open days for the Flu jab, where you walk in, get the jab, perhaps a few other tests and walk out about 5 minutes later, may be less!.

Talk to the doctor directly!. Sometimes receptionists are nasty and the doctor needs to know!. He will probably override her and get you in!. If not, get the immunization elsewhere and send a letter to the doctor explaining why you had to get service outside of his practice!. Doctors do not like to lose patients!. If he doesn't care, he is a lousy doctor, get a new one!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

With asthma, he really should get a flu shot!. If he didn't have asthma he could get the FluMist without a shot!. Why not take him to a local pharmacy or other provider for the shot!? He doesn't have to get it at his primary medical providers office!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You are not getting a very good service from your doctor are you!. Phone up the practice and ask to speak to the practice manager because you want to complain!. If they brush you off change your doctor and complain to the local PCT (Primary Care Trust)Www@Answer-Health@Com

magic_fairydust,
If your report of the treatment that you received by the receptionist is accurate, it is worth contacting the NHS and complain!. Unless the rules have changed, receptionists are not allowed to diagnose, meaning that the receptionist is not in a position to make the decision as to whether your child should or should not receive the anti flu injection!.
If the receptionist informed you that you would not be able to receive the injection because the surgery waiting list was full for the next eight weeks, you might like to attend the surgery and obtain a letter from the receptionist to this effect before you attend the emergency department of the local hospital or health centre in order that your child may be vaccinated before the time is too late!. If you have the means to record the words spoken by the receptionist it might be useful if or when you complain to the NHS authority, to be able to replay the words spoken to you!.(8 weeks is nearly halfway through December)!.
There is one thing that you have not mentioned!. That is whether your child has ever received the anti flu injection before!. I ask because it is cultured in chicken eggs and some asthmatics are allergic to egg yolk!. If you have your child injected and there is an anaphalactic reaction, there could be problems associated with breathing which might need medical assistance!.
I regret that this is not really of much help and, in the end, you must make your decisions the way that you think is correct for your child!.
I wish you well!.

Hope it helps
