You can get cold sores (oral herpes) if you have never had sex or any sexual contact. Cold sores are usually spread by being kissed by someone who has them. They can also be passed by sharing drinks, chap stick, lip stick, cigarettes, etc, with someone who has cold sores. It's estimated about 75 - 80% of the WORLD has cold sores. Its extremely common.
Genital herpes is almost always spread by sex (vaginal, oral, and anal) or by DIRECT skin to skin contact with the infected area. It can also be passed during birth, but this is VERY rare.
