Good and bad cholesterol?!

Question:

Good and bad cholesterol?

Could someone please tell me what the difference between good and bad cholesterol is, and why one is good and one is bad. I thought that was only one type of cholesterol.

waashaa, as you say cholesterol can't dissolve in blood, so it uses lipoproteins to get around. So then we dont have good or bad cholesterol just different sized lipoproteins that transport it, after all it's the same cholesterol in them all isn't it?
Now that we've estblished that cholesterol is not floating freely in the blood, but encased in a lipoprotein, why does it pass from the lipoprotein and attach itself to an otherwise healthy artery wall? surely the liver does not manufacture cholesterol wiyh the sole purpose of clogging our arteries?

keepcm HDl and LDL refer to high and low dencity LIPOPROTEINS. They are neither a fat (lipid) or cholesterol(a sterol). Both of these are not water soluble so they need a carrier to be transported throughout the body, That carrier is a lipoprotein. The density refers to the size only, not how sticky it is. The cholesterol of tryglceride inside must pass from the lipoprotein to the cell that requires it. Unfortunately, my question remains unanswered

So , Ok , I'll admit it, I knew the answer all along. There is no good or bad cholesterol. There is only one type of cholesterol, that is transported around the body in different sized Lipoproteins. Cholesterol, Liporoteins and lipids are three completly different things.
I had a look at the links posted, and it makes you wonder what hope people have of being informed when The American Heart Associations own website can't publish acurated information. A Lipoprotein is not a lipid!
Both fats and Cholesterol are transported around the body encased in these Lipoproteins using, as most cellular processed do, receptors to instigate their usage by cells within the body. Now unless something is wrong, the body doesn't just allow these complex actions to happen willy nilly, They work on a request and supply system if you want.
Let's look at scar tissue, it is full of cholesterol. That means that after a wound occurs, the body deposits cholesterol around it as part of the healing process.

So to follow this in a logical way, cholesterol cannot be the cause of any problem. It is merely the body's way of trying to fix up a problem caused by something else. This is basic biochemistry combined with simple logic, something that seems to take a back seat to a set of golf clubs with a pharmaceutical company's logo by most in the medical profession..
Untill this changes, we will never learn the true cause, and thus the PREVENTION of, heart disease.
For a good explanation about lipoproteins, this is written with us laymen in mind, and yes, the author does have letters after his name
