Can a county hospital turn you away for insulin?!

Question:

Can a county hospital turn you away for insulin?

My boyfriend is low on insulin and we just don't have the money for it. We applied online for county hospital benefits but they've not gotten back to us so we're going to go in. Can they turn him away?
He is type 1.

I know state funded hospitals (USA) cannot turn down someone for lack of funds esp if it is a lethal condition. The thing we applied for would give him GREAT copay options not free but close enough to we would be fine. just dont want to go in there be turned away and not know where to go next

Answers:

A hospital can not turn a patient who needs any life saving care away, and needing insulin is a life threatening issue. But, just because they don't turn him away, and treat him (as well as give him a prescription I'm sure for more insulin at home), if he does not qualify for any state or federal medical assistance, he will have to pay the bill. Sadly, the patient's are always the one left responsible for their bills at the end of the day. Don't give up on finding medical assistance from the state, and also look into free clinics, they usually have them in different cities. There is so much education for Diabetes out there as well, contact those organizations. I know there are a few out there that can help you, or tell you where to go. Diabetes is not something to take lightly, make sure he eats right, and if he shows signs of low insulin, take him to the ER, regardless of whose paying, his life is worth all the money in the world. Good luck to you both!
