Worried I could have HIV?!

Question:

Worried I could have HIV?

A week after I had unprotected sex, I got herpes. I took aciclovir for 5 days but the outbreak continued for a total of 6 weeks. I am worried the long outbreak could be because I may have also gotten HIV.

I got tested for HIV about 2 weeks and 12 weeks after intercourse. Both negative. The second was PCR.

I was pretty relieved after the 12 week test. But I know you're supposed to wait 13 weeks. So, I'm still worried. I will go back again at 14 weeks.

Questions:

Is a 6 week herpes outbreak very abnormal? What are the chances of that being HIV related?

How accurate is a HIV test after 12 weeks instead of 13?

Answers:

I doubt that have you HIV or AIDS, even more so by your test results. Different people experience different results with the virus, but I have met someone who had their first outbreak for 5 weeks. It is true that HIV can enter the body more easily through the genital area because of the lesions caused by herpes, but that doesn't mean you have it. You should be tested 6 months after the time you had sex, not 13 weeks. It takes 6 months for a detectable amount of antibodies, that try to fight the virus, to be noticed by the blood test. I would wait until 6 months has passed to be retested. I think you are find though. Hope this helps.

P.S. I am sorry to hear about your diagnoses of herpes. I know it seems like the end of the world right now, but eventually you will go on and probably even forget you have it. Over time you won't have as many outbreaks.
