One more thing: Will she need surgery, and if so will she cure fast even though she has diabetes?

Answers:

hi, I am a female with Crohn's disease and am familar with Ulcerative Colitis. Crohn's is NOT curable but can be treated w/ medications; surgery is a last resort. UC is curable via a total colectomy permanent ileostomy when the patient has exhausted all avenues to the point that the disease is affecting the patient's life and he /she can no longer tolerate the pain/life they are leading (living in the bathroom 24/7) and the medication isn't working.

I belong to the local Crohns & Colitis Foundation of America as well as the local ostomy support group. If you go to their sites, you can find information on diet, exercise, medications, treatments, and locate a local support chapter where you mom lives so she can meet others like herself. Knowledge is power...the more she knows, the better off she'll be when it comes to making decisions on her health care.

The CCFA has a number you can call M-F 9 am - 5 pm (EST) 888.MY.GUT.PAIN (888-694-8872). The United Ostomy Association of America has a site as well as a phone number where you can ask questions. Both of these organizations are run by people who have IBD (Crohns or UC) --CCFA; and the ostomy association is run by folks who have an ostomy due to CD, UC, or cancer.

I have met so many folks w/UC at the ostomy group and they all have said the same thing, they wish they had gotten the ileostomy sooner because they are pain free, drug free, and can lead a normal life. I've had my ileostomy for 21 yrs. and I don't regret it since it saved my
life.

For gut pain, Thermacare heat wrap for the back, I use it on the stomach or a heating pad 15 minutes on--20 minutes off...watch what she eats, relaxation tapes such as the ocean, dolphins, whales, birds when she is stressed, mild exercise, joining a support group to meet others in the same boat, and just being there for her when she needs help with chores due to the pain she's in.

IBD is a pain in the butt, (no pun intended) but they've come a long way in treatments from when I was dxed back in the 1980s. Good luck to you and your mom.
