A question about Synthroid?!

Question: A question about Synthroid!?
I am a student nurse and for clinicals i have a patient who has has a thyroidectomy!. When i checked her medications, none of them were Synthroid/Thyroxine!. Can anyone tell me why a person with no thyroid would not be on hormone replacement!? I cant seem to figure it out! Www@Answer-Health@Com

How long ago did she get her thyroidectomy!? It's possible that if it was very recently, she may still have a lot of free T4 and thyroxine floating around (you could check her labs to find out)!. Her doctor might be waiting for the levels to get in normal range before starting the Synthroid, as you wouldn't want to give that to someone with a high thyroxine level!.

You are correct in thinking that she needs to be on Synthroid, for the rest of her life!. I've had plenty of hypothyroid patients on Synthroid, so if the person didn't have ANY thyroid, of course they would need it!. :)Www@Answer-Health@Com
