What is the latest thing you have heard about that actually cured cancer?
If you had your last shot at doing something to cure cancer in you, what would you try? What have you heard about? Would it be a special substance into an IV? What is out there?
Answers:
Stem cell transplant is a close cure for some leukemia (and lymphoma, I think) patients. Stem cells are collected either from your own blood, an adult donor, or the umbilical cord and placenta of a new born baby. The patient is hit up with some pretty tough chemo and rad to kill all the existing bone marrow. You are then given the new stem cells. If everything works the way it should, the new cells start growing into marrow and new blood and a new immune system.
This process works more often with cells from a donor than with your own cells. I don't know that there is truely a "cure" but this is really the only option for long-term remission an staying in remission for some leukemia patients.
