Answers:

Look up "pectus excavatum" and see if this applies to your son...
I must say, I just did a brief Yahoo search (figured I outta see what I was referring you to) and was quite "horrified" with what I came up with. (My 11 month old son has a pectus excavatum and my wife- who is also a physician- and I thought it was kinda cute when we first it, and we STILL do)
Needless to say, I would take your son to the doctor to have this "investigated" if he is having "symptoms" as a result of the narrowed chest cavity that results from it...yes theoretically your son will have more difficulty with endurance sports than someone without a chest wall deformity as the expansion of the lung can be impeded, but quite frankly, he will have better endurance with a pectus excavatum than if he were "obese"- which can also make it difficult for the chest wall to fully expand and obesity is MUCH more common in America.
If your son fits the description of pectus excavatum perfectly, that is he was born with his deformity, and you can't tell that he's out of breath, I'd save your time and money and mention it to the doctor when you are seeing the doc for another reason- like his first "cold" =P
