Hi all, I did a TSH blood test (thyroid) for the first time so far and my TSH !


Question:

Hi all, I did a TSH blood test (thyroid) for the first time so far and my TSH was 7.5.?

I was already having symptoms of thyroid such as tiredness, weight gain, lack of energy/concentration etc....and i visited a doctor who has prescribed a TSH test.......is there any abnormality at a TSH of 7.5? Am I having any disease? I am yet to visit the doctor .....any help greatly appreciated

Sorry, I forgot to mentiont that my T3 & T4 levels were well within the normal range.


Answers:

Doctors used to consider normal TSH levels from .5 to 5.0. In recent years that range has been narrowed to .3 to 3.0. By either standard your level is too high. And being that you are symptomatic you are probably in need of supplementation.

You may need more tests done but, only your doctor can decide that. If you aren't seeing an Endocrinologist you should. When I became hypothyroid my Primary Care Dr. didn't want to put me on any hormone supplements. The Endocrinologist didn't hesitate and I feel much better as a result.
