My friend told me that if you catch a cold sore by kissing your bf/gf when they have one, its not like ordinary common cold sores. He said this type of cold sore dosent go away. That it stays there forever, visable for the world to see. Is this true?

Yes and no. The virus has not changed. It is the same common cold sore virus that has been around for ages. We are just not starting to accept that what we called a cold sore in the past is really the herpes virus. Once you have it, you always have it. Some people have constant outbreaks and sores. Others never show any symptoms at all. It just depends on how your body deals with the virus. While it is more contagious during visible outbreaks, it can be contracted at any time.
Yes it can be passed by kissing. It can also be passed by sharing food or drinks, chapstick or any transfer of skin cells from one mouth to another.
Once you have it, you can transfer it to the genitals through oral sex. You can also contract it by giving oral sex to someone who has genital herpes.
Most people have some form of herpes. While your friend is basically correct, it is not the big deal they are claiming. Chances are you both already have it.
