Hello everyone!. I am 17 and beginning to believe i could have diabetes!. My grandmother has it, as well as one of my girl friends younger brother, so the whole being young and it not starting until your older most of the time ordeal does not affect my thoughts!.

my questions are;;

ironically, how old were you when you found out!?

how did you determine for sure that you had them, such as was it a suprise that occured at a check up or did you suspect it!?

What symptoms, if any led you to believe you could have it!?

If you are young, how did your parents react when you brought about the idea that you think you may have Diabetes!?

off of the research i did for my self i have the following symptoms;;

[X] Frequent urination
[X] Excessive thirst
[X] Extreme hunger
[ ] Unusual weight loss
[X] Increased fatigue
[X] Irritability
[X] Blurry vision (ON OCCASION, NOT ALL THE TIME, and i do not wear glasses because when I'm not having the blurred vision thing i have perfect eyesite, and i can usually tell my eye feels different when it occurs)

What do you think could be wrong with me or do you think it could just be a teenage thing!? My mother and younger sister both have small bladders so that could be my problem too bc i've always went to the restroom a lot!.

also if it is of any help, i got off of my menstrual the week before last and this saturday started again!. so i am on it right now as well!. :(Www@Answer-Health@Com

Diabetes can definitely start when you are young!. I know a five year old child who has it!. You definitely have many ( not necessarily all) of the symptoms but they could also be related to something else!. Does your breath ever smell "fruity" or sweet!? That can be a sign of untreated diabetes!. Also your urine, (I know, gross) can have a slight fruity smell if your body is spilling sugar in your urine!. Bottom line you can't know for sure until you go to your doctor!. He may do a glucose tolerance test or a Hemoglobin A1C!. All that means is a simple blood test!. They draw a tube of your blood and do a lab test and it tells approximately how high your sugar has been running for the past three months!. That number is a good indication of whether you have diabetes!. The glucose tolerance test is where you go to the doctor in the morning fasting (no breakfast)!. They will give you a sugary drink and then check your sugar at about 2 hours after and sometimes four hours after to see how your body is processing the sugar!. They can also test your urine for the presence of glucose and ketones which should not normally be in your urine!. Neither test is hard or painful so you should go to the doctor and tell him what has been going on for your health and peace of mind!. Be sure to include all the details and symptoms!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

From the ages of 8 to 14 i had hypoglycemia which is low blood sugar!. i never really thought anything of it cuz i was 98 lbs soakin wet!. but around my 15 birthday i started to gain weight fast wasnt until i was 17 that i had type 1 diabetes!. its part of my metabolic x Www@Answer-Health@Com

I started in my early 30's!. I had a Pre employment physical!. You can have a piss test done, don't need to take blood!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

It sounds like the beginnings of diabetes!. Usually the extreme thirst and hunger are two of the main signs of this disease!. There are a few tests out there that would be able to tell you for sure whether or not you have the disease!.

GTT (Glucose Tolerance Test) this test is given to you by you going to a lab, they will check your blood sugar through a blood check!. Then you will be asked to take a syrupy orange fluid and have as much as you can of it, and then they will test you again to see what the result of it is!.

Another test they do, is they will take your blood and look at the amount of sugar in your body!. Then they will send you home and eat some meals, and then they will have you come back to the clinic, and then they will check your blood sugar again!.

FBG (Fasting Blood Glucose) -- this is when you go on an empty stomach to the lab!. They will see how much your blood sugar is without having food!.

RBS (random blood sugar) this is taken when you have eaten a meal or some food, and it will show how high or how low it is with food!.

Urine test -- this will show ketones if you have diabetes!.

I hope that this helps answer your question!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

it was a month after my 16th birthday
it was my mom and aunt who noticed and brought me to the doc!. and as there are 3 other diabetics in my family everyone was supportive and understanding!.
my symptoms were
excessive urination
ridiculously extreme thirst!!!!
lost about 14 lbs
my eyesight is always bad so not sure bout that one!
i ate loads!.!.!.!.

i get times where i have itchy skin now, but i dont really recall it from before i was diagnosed!.!.!.

there is no harm in getting checked out if you're worried!. better to be safe than sorry!. you do have symptoms but they could be just natural things your body is going through!.

hope this helped!!! and best of luck!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Diabetes canNOT be diagnosed by symptoms alone!. You MUSt have blood tests taken by the doctor!.

The symptoms you list ARE symptoms of diabetes, but they ar ALSO symptoms of other diseases, including puberty!. Symptoms alone are NOT a reliable diagnosis!.

The BEST test to take is called an A1C test!. This is a relatively new test (4-5 years)!. It takes an AVERAGE of your blood sugars over the last 90 days!. Being an AVERAGE, it accounts for the normal high and lows that occur during each day!.

NORMAL A1C reading is between 5 and 6!.
a HIGH reading is greater than 7!. if your A1C reading is greater than 7, then you might be diabetic, and the doctor will want to do more tests to confirm it!.

Since your grand mother has it, you might have a "genetic disposition" towards the disease!. You need to have the A1C test done once a years, every year for the rest of your life!. This way, if you DO get diabetes it will be caught early before it does damage!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I was 12 when I discovered it, I was thirsty and needed the toilet a lot!. I'd see a doctor, there seems to be something wrong, and if you let it continue it may get a lot worse (most people only get diagnosed when they start throwing up and stuff)!. My dad's a diabetic and a doctor, so he did a urine test after I told him!. Even if it is nothing, seeing a doctor will usually involve a blood sugar test or a urine test to confirm, it's quick and it can be confidential if you don't want to panic your parents!. Make sure you do something, as the alternative could be you being admitted to A&E!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
