I am in a very singing/dance intensive show, my chords start to ache very quickly after I start singing. The parts I am singing ARE within my vocal range, and I know it is very possible to pop a vessel in that area. Did I pop a blood vessel?

Answers:

You may be developing something called a nodule. It is a small lump on your vocal chords and it is very bad. See your doctor asap.

Nodules can cause permanent damage to your voice so don't delay getting this checked out.

If you are in a show then you obviously have a great voice. To protect your voice it is best to get professional vocal lessons. It will teach you how to use your diaphram to project your voice without straining and risking nodules developing. Its worth the money and your future career on the stage.

Here is a simple breathing exercise to get you started:

Place your hands on either side of your tummy just below your ribs. Breath from your tummy not your upper chest. Breath deeply and feel the air expand your lungs completely, hold it for a moment, and breath out on a slow controlled "hiss" sound. Use your tummy muscles to push all the air out. This is an easy exercise to see how your diaphram works to project your voice.

Try this singing notes on a scale for a warm-up. Always warm up your voice before going on stage.
