Scared About First Breast Biopsy?!

Question: Scared About First Breast Biopsy!?
I am 25 years old!. I have had a lump in my armpit area for about 5 years, and although its stupid of me to not get it checked out sooner, about 1 month ago I finally went to my gyno because the lump had gotten firmer and bigger, and she wanted to do an Ultrasound of my armpit and my left breast!. They sent me for a ultrasound, and they found that the lump in my armpit was a mass, and they also found a small one in my left breast and wanted to send me in for a biopsy, I met with my surgeon, because I am having the one in my armpit removed to be biopsied, because it gets in my way and isnt painful but just uncomfortable when my shirt rubs on it!. While they remove the one in my armpit they will do biopsy of the one in my breast!. Im a little worried, i asked to be completly put to sleep for the procedure but she said they will have to do a wire localization while Im awake first before they wheel me over for surgery of the one and biopsy of the other!.!.!.!. what happens with a wire localization!? Will they give me happy pills!? Could I ask for them!? I am a jumper and I have to watch whats going on!.!.!. will they put the IV in me before that or after!? Im just very confused and worried!.

Answers:
I had the wire localization the day of my lumpectomy/AND!. Honestly I remember very little about it!. It was quite early in the morning, and I was a bit stressed about the surgery itself!.

But IF it had been bad, I would have remembered that!. I don't believe they administer a local first!. They initially tried to place the wire via ultrasound, however they were unable to locate the metal clips that had been left in me during the previous biopsy!. So we had to localize via real-time mammogram!. That was fun!. (Not!.) Not terribly painful, just quite uncomfortable and awkward!. The wire is very thin and I don't recall it being painful !.!.!. just a twang!. Then they put a styrofoam cup over the breast to protect the wire, with the wire sticking out -- looks like you have an antenna coming out of your boob!. It's a real self-esteem booster, that procedure!.

The IV went in quite a bit later, in surgery prep!.

None of it is horribly painful, just mostly uncomfortable!. (But then, I have a pretty high pain threshold!. Very low nausea threshold, but high pain threshold!.)Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had a large mass removed when I was 22, before "Wire localization" was invented!.

Thankfully, many masses are benign!.

The Harvard Medical site www!.health!.harvard!.edu/diagnostic-tests/!.!.!. describes the procedure!. It helps the surgeon see exactly where your mass is so he can remove it without having to "dig around" to find it all!. So it probably saves you more discomfort in the long run!.

Good Luck & try to think happy thoughts!. The medical staff know what they are doing and they know about your fear!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

go to revelutionhealth!.com they explain the wired procedure!. i have breast cancer and they only did a biopsy!. they did not remove the mass until after chemo!. my mass was too large!. they tried chemo to shrink the tumor before surgery!. then i had a radical mastectomy, cancer had spread into my lymphatic system!. lymph nodes were removed with no clear margins!. i hope the tumor that you have is non cancerous!. but if not they will let you know the best course of treatment for you!. treatment depends on the type of cancer and the involvement of cancer in each person!. good luck and god bless!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
