Is it normal to forget breathing for a few seconds?!

Question:

Is it normal to forget breathing for a few seconds?

Sometimes I catch myself stop breathing for a few seconds and I don't know why I do it. When I say stop breathing I mean like stop inhaling and exhaling, like holding my breath. And sometimes I get a headache cause I think oxegen doesn'y get to my brain. Am I weird or does this happen to many people?

im not on any medication. but i am shy so when i get around people i tend to tense up and hold my breathe, so maybe thats why?

Answers:

Your autonomic nervous system controls your breathing, which means it is an involuntary function. But you can also voluntarily control your breathing. Your headache, rather than resulting from oxygen deprivation, may be a result of tensing the muscles in your neck and head and clenching your teeth, since you mentioned you are shy and "tense up" around others. Some of the other posters have given some very good advice on breathing and relaxing in social situations.
