What causes a gall bladder to become enlarged and have lots of stones in it?!
Question:
What causes a gall bladder to become enlarged and have lots of stones in it?
My sister went in to have her gall bladder removed. The surgeon was amazed at the size of it, it was the largest he's ever seen, and it had a ton of stones in it. My sister is obese, wieghs about 325 pounds. Would her weight cause this, or would it be something else that caused this?

There is no history in my family for having bad gall bladders and stones.

Your gallbladder is like a balloon. It fills with bile that helps to digest fatty food. So when you eat something fatty, the gallbladder is triggered to contract and release the bile. Some people seem to have a family history of gallstones and others develop them for other reasons, like a fatty diet. So the reason your sister's gallbladder was so big was because the stones were stuck in the "neck", like the opening of a balloon, and the bile couldn't get out. Therefore, it just kept getting bigger, and that caused the inflammation and pain that probably got your sister into a hospital to see a doctor. Hope that helps.
