Shellfish allergies?!

Question:

Shellfish allergies?

i am allergic to shellfish like crab, lobster and shrimp but i'm not allergic to iodine that i was told comes from shellfish. my question is; crabs, lobsters and shrimp live in saltwater inviroment. would someone like me also be allergic to freshwater shellfish like crawfish?

Answers:

Just to be on the safe side, I would avoid all shellfish, regardless if is freshwater or not, especially if you experience really severe allergic reactions. I've known ever since I was little that I'm allergic to peanuts. I just assumed that I was allergic to all nuts and avoided them (unless of course I accidentally ate something I didn't know had nuts in it). A couple years ago, I accidentally eaten a cookie that I didn't know had walnuts in it and got really sick. So that just reinforces the idea (for me anyway) that if you're allergic to one type of food (such as a type of shellfish or nuts) chances are you are allergic to similar types of food. Hope this helps.
