How many people have diabetes in america?!

Question:

How many people have diabetes in america?

statistics and charts

Answers:

There are an estimated 20 million people with diabetes in the US. Roughly one third of those are undiagnosed.

Of those 20 million people, approximately 90% are type 2 (NIDDM). The remaining percentage are type 1 (IDDM). While the vast majority of type 2s can manage with diet, exercise and oral medication, there are some that require insulin. All type 1s must take insulin shots two or more times a day or use an insulin pump to survive. Type 1s do not have the option of relying strictly on diet, exercise or oral medications. Type 1s must still watch their diets and maintain an exercise regimen but oral medications would not be effective in managing type 1 diabetes. Insulin is a must and has to be taken by injection (although recently, a nasal insulin has been released but is not widely in use as of yet).

In recent years, there has been an increase in type 2 diabetes among children and teenagers. Sources state that children of this generation are leading more sedentary lifestyles as opposed to children of 10-20 years ago. This is unfortunate and scary.
