Will ciprofloxacin cure strep throat?!

Question:

Will ciprofloxacin cure strep throat?

Answers:

Your throat must be swabbed for a C&S (culture and sensitivity) to determine what antibiotic to use. Ciprofloxacin is indeed often prescribed for the streptococcus bacteria type A. However, you should never take leftover antibiotics or another person's antibiotics. Antibiotics must be "fresh" and prescribed specifically for you; otherwise the antibiotic may kill some of the bacteria and the bacteria that remain resume multiplying and become stronger. If you are taking someone else's antibiotics, or leftover antibiotics, and visit your physician for a throat swab, you MUST tell him/her. Otherwise the antibiotics will interfere with the results and you may seem to have a less severe infection than otherwise would be.
