Question:

In light of the new No Smoking Law in the UK, how many cigarettes might I have passively smoked?

I am 27 and have been out to social pubs/clubs for about two night a week over about 9 years. (I hate smoking but like going out). How many cigarettes might I have passively had, if say each place I have been in was 'averagely smokey'. Thanks

Answers:

You've smoked 1/2 as many as you owe the smoker who donated that nicotine to your system.

There are a few reasons you shouldn't think in terms of cigarettes and try to quantify it as polution:

First, you aren't subject to the trauma caused by the heat from inhaling a cigarette directly, second the environments you were in were not entirely confined (fire safety) or continuous, third the majority of the smoke you breathed was already processed by the person smoking the cigarette (filtered and cooled), and fourth the number of non-smokers exerts a net reduction in the negative effects of a finite level of smoke in any environment.

If you have not smoked a cigarette, then you have not smoked one. PERIOD.

Smoking is unhealthy, second hand smoke is also unhealthy, worrying about smelling a cigarette in the street or smelling tobacco smoke on somebody is also unhealthy.

Don't be neurotic because what little damage there is, and if you drank while clubbing for 9 years you probably did a lot more with alcohol, is done.

If you did not smoke you have smoked zero cigarettes.
