Nikki, If your son was diagnosed by a qualified doc with "2nd stage" Lyme disease- also known as "early disseminated"- no responsible doc would only give him two WEEKS of amoxicillun!. Not anywheres NEAR enough!. It's sad as although his symptoms may have waned, he may very well have slipped into "late-stage" in the last 3 months!.
It simply means that any spirochetes that have remained have had a chance to spread to areas throughout his body, requiring a longer & stronger antibiotic protocol!.
No symptoms since Sept is Good!. It means if it IS Lyme, his "count" is relatively low, possibly because he has a weaker strain, his immune is in top shape, etc!. (The latter means he would likely show significantly + on his Western blots!.)
However, you need to find a New doc & SOON!. Someone who has experience dealing with Lyme in kids!. The best is in CT, but he may be too busy to see him!. Ask around!. Also, you might find a referral thru either the lymenet!.org or ILADS!.org websites!.
I'm not sure if he's old enough to be on doxycycline, but whatever he's put on, he needs to be on it for a couple months anyway!. Not because he's "really sick" but because the Lyme bugs only go thru a growth phase once every four WEEKS, which is when they are most susceptible to being "lysed" by the abx!.
Oh!.!.!. & don't wait for any "Gov't assistance"! The earlier it's treated the better the outcome!. All knowledgable docs know this!.
{2 weeks is even at the low end of the IDSA recommends!. I'd be suspicious of this "doc's" knowledge!. Seriously!}
Oh & it's Lyme disease, not Lyme's!. There was never any Mr!. Lyme that had it!. Sorry, but us "lymies" get really bugged by this at times!. ;)
Good luck! -MWww@Answer-Health@Com

amoxicillin, cefuroxime, and doxycycline are all equally as effective against Lyme!.

We do not give doxycycline to children under the age of 9 - because it would destroy their teeth!. What your doctor did was appropriate, EXCEPT -- if the diagnosis were actual Lyme arthritis, then the treatment duration should be 4 weeks not two!.

Not knowing any other details of the case, if you say your son had lack of mobility of the knee, I would take this as evidence of Lyme arthritis, and treat for 4 weeks!. Did he have a large amount of joint fluid present (called a "joint effusion")!? Did the doctor remove the fluid with a needle!? This would be standard care!.

Since your son is already partially treated, and feeling well, there is no emergency - you can wait a month or two for medicaid to kick in!.

You will probably find out that he did NOT have actual Lyme arthritis - that your son just had aches in his neck and knee, without any effusion nor swelling!. In this case, 2 weeks would have been the exact correct treatment!.

Please don't listen to any of the Lyme Lunatics in here and on the web!. They'll have you believing that you need to stay on antibiotics for the rest of your life-- that's complete hogwash!. I've treated many many cases of Lyme, and all are quite easily cured with treatment such as you have given your son!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

To battle the intial infection Doxycycline used or do you mean for after effects!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Amoxicillin is one of the medications that can work for Lyme disease!. But it only targets the spirochete form, not the L-form or the cyst form of the bacteria!. Zithromax is one of the antibiotics that targets the L-form, and Flagyl is one that targets the cyst form!.

However, children have been known to get better with just amoxicillin!. Two weeks, though, is not nearly long enough!.

A short course of antibiotics lasting 4-6 weeks is long enough for someone who is treated very early in the course of Lyme disease, such as during the rash stage!. But once the later symptoms start it takes a lot longer than that!.

In order to get longer term treatment, you'd need to see a doctor who follows the ILADS guidelines!. I'll give you a message board to ask for referrals!. You may have a difficult time finding a doctor who accepts Medicaid, but maybe you'll be really lucky and find one!. Here's the link for referrals!. http://flash!.lymenet!.org/scripts/ultimat!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
