Blood in my phlegms?!

Question:

Blood in my phlegms?

ive been sick for about 3 days n just this morning i went to spit out a phlegm and i noticed there was some blood in it. can someone tell me if this is serious?

Answers:

Have you been coughing pretty hard for the past few days?

If the air is pretty dry where you live and you're coughing quite a bit, your throat might get a bit raw and that's why you're seeing a bit of blood in your sputum/phlegm. Don't worry too much about the small amounts of blood. Just get some cough drops/medicine (talk to your pharmacist)/warm tea to sooth the throat and decrease the pain and inflammation and it'll go down.

Now if there is a significant amount of blood (i.e. comes out all red or dark brown), I would definitely go to a doctor and have it checked out. Especially if you are feeling extreme pain and finding it hard to breathe.

If you feel nauseous (especially when you wake up in the morning), you might be swallowing a bit too much blood and should go get it checked out with your doctor as well.

If you're feeling absolutely fatigued or dizzy or some extreme physical feelings then it would be reassuring to go have it checked out.

Decrease intake of phlegm producing foods like milk and increase water intake for now and in a couple of days if your throat/chest does not feel better, head to your doctor.

Get well soon!

PS. If you are VERY worried, go to the doctor right away just to be safe so you would feel better physically and mentally as stress will decrease your immune system.
