Diabetic: Can I have a fourth meal or snack?!

Question: Diabetic: Can I have a fourth meal or snack!?
Hello!. I'm a recently diagnosed type 1 diabetic and I just recently switched insulin plans from 2 high unit shots a day, to one shot before each meal and two small background shots a day!. On my old plan I could have a snack every night before bed, but now that I give myself injections for every meal I'm not sure what I should do about a snack or fourth meal, and it's to late to call or ask my doctor!. I know my insulin to carb ratio and everything, so I can give myself an injection before the snack if need be!. Any help!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, if you inject some fast-acting before the snack, provided you are on a non-peaking long-acting insulin like Lantus, you should be fine!. Have you looked into an insulin pump!? You can eat as often or infrequently as you like, it's really a lifesaver, you'll never go back to injections!. Minimed, Animas, Deltec Cozmo, these are the most popular brands, and they'll do a lot of the insurance legwork for you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I've had a bed time snack ever since I was put on a mixture of Lilly semi-lente and utra-lente insulin when I was seven years old!. I also used to have an afternoon snack, but I gradually eliminated afternoon snack before i changed school in the 11th grade!. I still have a bed time snack!. Until I switched from Lilly to Novolin in November 1993!. I took only one injection of insulin in the morning, Now I'm on two injections a day, 1 before breakfast, whether I have breakfast or not, and before dinner!. Because there is regular insulin in Novolin 70/30, and I've always been sensitive to fast acting insulin, even more sensitive now that I'm post menopausal, I still have the bed-time snack!. Whether I have carbohydrates as part that snack depends on what my bed time blood sugar is!.

If you're a recently diagnosed type 1, it's probably best if you don't adjust your insulin dose yourself yet!. Can't you call your endo and ask!? If you're recently diagnosed, you'd think they'd be available for questions!.

My daughter is a type 1 diabetic, and she's 3!. The plan she's on allows for 3 meals and 3 snacks!. She gets her snacks 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours after her meal !.!.!. the Humalog she takes for her meals peaks about that time, so it covers her snack too!. And then she also gets one shot of Lantus every morning to cover her the rest of the time!. You didn't say what kind of insulin you're on !.!.!. if it's Humalog, maybe you could try giving yourself a bit more with dinner and then maybe you can have a snack two hours later!.

Again, it's probably best to talk to your endo before trying this!.

Or you could always have a no-carb snack at bedtime!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi,

You might want to read a book called Dr!. Barnard's program for reversing diabetes!. While you can not reverse type 1, you can prolong your good health as long as possible and reverse the insulin resistant diabetes symptoms!.

It is very interesting and might help out your health a lot!. Many of the subjects where able to stabilize their blood sugar levels once they changed their diets!.

I say a diet change will be well worth it if it means not cutting off my toes due to poor circulation (my aunt had that type of surgery)

By eating a larger meal at dinner, such as sweet potato with cinnamon on top, you can absorb that type of meal very slowly, and perhaps not feel hungry at night!. I am not sure!. Cinnamon is good for you!.

I suggest that you try making oatmeal with cinnamon for a week - in place of whatever you are eating for breakfast now (unless you have something prescribed that you need to eat)!. You can add Apples, it makes it taste great, but don't add milk or butter!. Avoid sugar, but a tiny amount is OK if that is required to make it taste good!. Dr!. Barnard says it is OK to eat a larger meal - IF it is the right kind of food (without any animal fat)!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
