Question:

Has anybody out there every suffered from GBS syndrome? gillian's barre syndrome?

I have a friend suffering from it right now and would like to hear from others who have or know someone who has

Answers:

I got it in 1985. It is not a very common disorder, but, those I have met, most recovered completely. Myself, it been 22 years this June. I am in good health, but, the residual damage from the GBS remains. My hands and legs are weak. I can walk, but, can not jump or run and most my weight is on the heels of my feet, so, they hurt most of the time from walking. Trying to stand in one place not work as it hard to maintain balance, I look like I trying to dance. So, a cane or something to hold to helps.
My understanding of this condition, it damages the connecting material between the nerve and muscle so the nerve can not transmit signals for the muscle to respond. Once that is damaged it not repair itself. A person will recover to a point as at first you almost paralyzed. It starts in the outer extremities and works inward and can get to where you can not breath or open your eyes. There are some web-sites around (Forums) where people who have had this talk. Also, I get you a medical reference that explain more.
