What is this neck rash I have, is it shingles?!

Question:

What is this neck rash I have, is it shingles?

About 5 days ago, I started to get this neck rash. It is only a little itchy and that is because I wear tight collars for work.

I looked up and read about shingles. But I have had no pain where the rash is or elsewhere on my body. Also, the rash has not blistered or contains liquid in any way.

I have not felt ill at all. I had a mild headache a couple days ago and took some tablets as normal, that's it.

So, I don't think its shingles but it looks just like the pictures here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/shingles#ep...
edit: I've just looked here at Google Images (http://tinyurl.com/2y6zvg) and it looks nowhere near as severe or bad!

By the way, I took some digital pictures of my rash here. What do you think? No pain, no fever, no blistering. But why should I get this strange rash on my neck???

Answers:

Shingles is a viral infection of the skin. The virus, Varicella zoster is actually the same virus that causes chicken pox. This virus can lay dormant in the nerves for decades. If you had chicken pox as a child, the virus can reactivate as an adult, causing shingles. Singles are typically more common in the elderly, probably due to their weakened immune systems caused by other health problems. Shingles usually only affects one side of the body, and mostly on the back and/or trunk area. It is painful to the point that even a light breeze can be difficult for the person to bear. The symptoms you've mentioned, and the pictures of your rash, lead me to believe you do not have shingles. The rash does resemble seborrhoeic dermatitis, but it's difficult to determine without a culture. You should see your physician just to be safe. Good luck to you :-)
