I want to be a drug councellor. How do i go about it?!

Question:

I want to be a drug councellor. How do i go about it?

I have no relevant qualifications but i was a drug addict for five years and i have been off them now for almost six years. I just want to help people who are in the situation that i was in. I can tell you more about drugs and what they do than a drug councellor with all qualifications needed under his belt because i have real life experience?

Answers:

R u in England?
i think your right, life experience and recovery is better than all the books or qualifications when working with addicts. look up your local drug programmes or drop in centres and see if you can get some voluntary work to get you started.
most drug counselling organisations ask for at least 5 years clean time (which you have, well done). i think with your history, some basic counsellor training you would walk into any drug project.
to work at any treatment centre, you must have qualifications now, diploma in counselling minimum.(sorry thats just the way it is now). compared to dealing with your own addiction, the training will be well within your reach.
i wish you all the best, good luck, paulie.
