What you are asking about is familial breast cancer!. This is caused by a few different types of mutations that increase the likelyhood of developing breast cancer!. The BRCA 1 and 2 mutation are the ones that we know the most about!. If you have one of these mutations there is a 60-70% chance of developing breast cancer by the time you are 75!. The average age of onset will be b/w 40-50!. These mutations account for less than 20% of breast cancers!. The reason that they cause cancer is b/c they code for tumor suppressor genes which (go figure) suppress tumor formation!. So when you mutations here you have a higher chance of developing tumors (in places other than breasts; ovaries for example)!.

Also, when a first degree relative (mother or sibling) has breast cancer, you add 5% to your chances of developing that type of cancer!. One in nine women will develope breast cancer during her life!.

Luckily, we have improved our screening procedures!. With a family history like yours, you need to be screened earlier than most other women!. Also, your family should get tested for BRCA mutations!.

I know that this is a difficult situation your family is in but you all need to stick together and try to motivate each other!. Also, make sure that you self examine yourself every month!. Studies show that women who do self breast examinations are able to detect smaller masses than women who do not self exam their breasts!. Your self examination should be a week after you start your menstrual cycle!.

Hope this helps!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Breast cancer as well as many others are very much related to heredity, so for it to run in the family is common!. I am undergoing chemo for lung cancer, which is what killed my mother, and an older brother also has it!. Strange that with all of us, is in the right lung, within a few centimeters of being the same place!. Women older than 40 should not settle on just self exams, by the time it is found, it is often too late, better to do yearly mammogramsWww@Answer-Health@Com
