Question #2: No one knows what "causes" viruses!. In the case of Influenza A virus strain, subtype H1N1 (the cause of Spanish flu) it may have been a mutation but this has yet to be established!.
Question #2a: It showed up first at Ft!. Riley in Kansas on March 4, 1918 and then a week later in Queens, New York on March 11, 1918!. In August of that same year, it showed up in France, Sierra Leone and Boston!. Probably carried by U!.S!. military personnel!. I pretty much agree with the first answer!. A good reference would be the book The Great Influenza: The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague In History by John M!. Barry!. It is a profound read and reads more like a novel than a textbook!. It goes into great detail about the starting points of the pandemic, how and where it spread, and the timeline off the pandemic!. It is quite possible that the disease originated through an antigenic drift (a change in the surface antigens of a virus) or antigenic shift (genetic change enabling a virus to jump from species to species) situation!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
