Doxycycline stains teeth?!

Question:

Doxycycline stains teeth?

I'm taking doxycycline for lyme disease. I'm supposed to be on it for 30-60 days. I've heard this drug can stain teeth. Is it a risk for 30-60 days of treatment? Can I prevent this?

Answers:

It usually is only a problem for people whose teeth are still forming (i.e. children). If your permanent teeth haven't come in yet, they might grow in discolored, because it can bind to the calcium in your teeth while they are growing. So it is (generally) not recommended in kids under about 13 or 14 years old. If you are an adult, or you have all of your permanent teeth, I wouldn't worry about it.
