Can I get genital herpes by kissing someone with it??!

Question:

Can I get genital herpes by kissing someone with it??

Answers:

Short answer, no, definitely not.

If the person has genital herpes and you kiss them on the mouth, you will not get genital herpes from their genital herpes infection BUT if they also have a separate infection of oral herpes (cold sores) you could get oral herpes yourself by kissing them on the mouth. If they only have genital herpes you wouldn't get anything because only their genitals would possibly be infectious.

If you perform oral sex on someone with genital herpes, you may get cold sores on you mouth (oral herpes)

If someone gets cold sores on their mouth and performs oral sex on you, there is a chance you could get genital herpes.

The only way you are going to get genital herpes from someone with genital herpes is through intercourse, or foreplay that includes genital to genital contact. Condoms do not provide full protection as the genital skin not covered by a condom can also be infectious.

Contrary to what a previous answerer said, although herpes type 1 generally causes cold sores on the mouth, and herpes type 2 generally causes genital herpes, both can be caught in either location. It is becoming increasingly common for people to contract genital herpes from receiving oral sex from someone with oral herpes, even when they do not have a visible cold sore. Up to 40% of new genital herpes infections are caught this way. This is what happened to me.
