Can you still get a peritonsillar abcess after a tonsillectomy?!

Question:

Can you still get a peritonsillar abcess after a tonsillectomy?

Had tonsillectomy a year ago after recurrent abcesses. I now have a severe one sided sore throat and only after 24 hrs. I assume its strep which i know you can get. I'm afraid of another abcess and should I see a dr. or should my body now be able to fight off strep on its own with no antibiotics considering i have no tonsils?

Answers:

A peritonsillar abscess, in rare cases, can occur after a bilateral tonsillectomy. But it's impossible for me to diagnose you.

You ask "should I see a doctor or should my body be able to fight off strep on its own with no antibiotics considering I have no tonsils?" My friend, what did you think tonsils were for??? They are lymph tissue and were a part of your lymphatic system which plays a big role in fighting infection.

By all means, see your doctor and get diagnosed and treated.
