Should you be able to feel the tubing from a vp shunt?

My son had a VP shunt put in about a month and a half ago and we can now see the shunt-it is raised on his head like a ridge. We can also feel the tube going down the back of his head, and down his chest, into his abdomen-where there is a lump (maybe scarring). Is this normal???

His neurosurgeon said that this is normal-I am not an idiot-I have already contacted the doctor-he is 14 months old-he can't really tell me if he is in pain...I was looking for others with this type of shunt just to verify this info...sorry if this wasn't clear to begin with...wasn't trying to get smart-*** answers.

Hi there! I can feel the tubing of my shunt from the back of the skull where it comes out, down the back of my ear, neck, over my collar bone. As I am sure I have more body fat than that of your son, that is where I stop feeling mine. The lump does sound like scarring as I also have one where they made the incision and a little more of a lump to one side where the tubing coils by the liver (right side). There really is no pain with mine, had mine done in May of this year, almost 2 months now. The only time it really bothers me is when I sleep too long on the right side where the tubing comes out and I guess it may squash it so it does not work correctly at night. I get a headache and that side of my head is sore. The headache can sometimes get pretty overwhelming. If your son is not acting out of the ordrinary, not pulling, touching, rubbing, crying or anything like that then he should be fine. Only worry if he starts to run a fever, his eyes won't raise up to follow your finger (called "sunset eyes"), starts throwing up or getting so lethargic that he can't stay awake. That could be signs of infection or malfuntion. I am sure you went through this all with your neurosurgeon though. The tubing can be felt and that is normal. I am glad to hear your boy is doing well and has passed that scarry surgery!
