Why does my big toe feel numb?!

Question:

Why does my big toe feel numb?

I went to a horse show yesterday and had new tall boots on... could that have anything to do with it?

Answers:

Actually wearing a certain kind of shoe can make your toe or part of your foot numb. If you wear something on your foot your not used to it can compress certain nerves in the foot. If you were riding in a show chances are your foot was in a certain position in your new boot that you aren,t used to. If you had a tall heel on the boot it could have exerted pressure on the nerve in your foot. You can get a swelling in that area that will dissapate if you rest your foot for a day or so and wear some comfortable shoes such as tennis shoes or a flat soled comfortable shoe. I,ve had this same experiance with the side of my big toe being numb, and it is a strange sensation. I,ve had this problem for years and have had no harm to my foot medicaly. Mine stemed from a shoe with a high heel and bone spurs that are already on my heal from natural causes. There are medical problems such as diabetis that can cause numbness in the foot but you said you had no problems prior to your shoe wearing so it seems the shoe and the differant position would be your cause. But if your condition continues after a reasonable amount of rest I would see my physician. You can soak your foot or feet in Epsom salts and warm water and rest your foot afterward by elevating it. Give yourself a little TLC for a couple of days are so.
