Colon cancer?!

Question:

Colon cancer?

My best friend has colon cancer.Three years ago they removed her large intestine and part of her stomach and wears a colostomy bag. They claim they could not get it all and that she is terminal. Her life expectancy was a year or so and thae cancer is not acting up and the doctors cannot believe that she is still here! Her brother died at age 35 from colon cancer and was gone within 18 months. She just went fishing and on vacation with me and has a great spirit. Have people survived this and continued on to live out their life with the cancer and it never act out again. I want to keep her and believe that she is not going anywhere. If anyone Could beat it it would be her. Am I kidding myself ? WilL it eventually take her and how long have people survived with this? We are both in our fifties and met in first grade. We supported each other through our marriages were there for each other when our children were born and she is my choosen sister in life. Can't imagine a world without her.

Answers:

There is no predicting the course a serious illness will take. I hope your dear friend remains in remission for many, many years, but you probably need to prepare yourself for the possibility that she will not. Doctors don't use the word "terminal" lightly.

Now's the time to rack up those good memories, take plenty of pictures, and make sure she knows how much you love her. If she's still with you in 20 years, this will not have been a mistake, and if she goes from this world sooner, you'll be glad you did it while you could.

As a long-time close friend, make sure she knows you'll be there for the times she's scared and fears the doctors are right, too. If she needs it, help her put her finances in order, update her will, and make her wishes for her last days known to the people legally allowed to enact them--family, usually, even when a friend is closer.
