Should I worry about my 8yr old's blood sugars if they are a bit high consistent!

Question:

Should I worry about my 8yr old's blood sugars if they are a bit high consistently?

He just turned 8. He drinks a lot and eats about every 1 1/2 hours, has been more emotional lately, with some unexplained tummy aches. I did his reading more on a whim a couple of months ago and followed up with the ped. They did a workup and said his A1C was 5.4, which I know is normal, but barely. My gut instinct said to just keep an eye on him. His highest reading had been 174, but now the last 3 were 206, 172, 215. All of the research that I have done seems to say that ones glucose should never ever be that high no matter what. Some tell me that this would be the 1st stages of Type 1 and that I am catching it b4 most do. My Mom is a RN and her colleuges agree and I know 1 person with Type 1 and she says the same. I would like to know the opinions of the Yahoo Community as well. Does anyone out there deal with Diabetes; and should I be worried?

Answers:

You know your child the best.
Those reading are a bit high.I think you may have discovered diabetes very early. Most kids don't have a dx until they are very ill.
The same thing happened to me.I knew my two yr old was drinking a lot, she threw up and was tired all the time.Doctor said she was fine. She is now 17 and has had diabetes for 15 yrs.
Take your son to a great pediatric endocrinologist and get a good check up.
I know this is upsetting but it is better to know than to let him get very sick.
I wish you the very best.
