Prescription refill for epi-pen?!

Question:

Prescription refill for epi-pen?

I need to get my sister a refil for an epi-pen. One of her nosy 9th grade classmates went into her bag and used it (this happened 2 weeks ago). I don't have any papers verifing this incident (the school does, but it's closed right now because summer school didn't start yet). They called the childs mother, and me to report about this. I really need to get a refill because it's dangerous if she needs it and I don't have it.

I want to get her another one (I have two more refils left) but she never had to use it and so she never went to the hospital for anaphylactic shock. Will the pharmacy know that? I don't want the pharmacist to think that someone is abusing the meds, (I heard that people abuse epinephrine).

Answers:

Just call the pharmacy. People lose epi-pens or have them stolen more often than you'd think. If you have refills left it shouldn't be a problem at all. I work in a doctor's office and we get requests for new epi-pens fairly often and don't require verification of what happened to the old one unless the person "loses" medications frequently. By the way, be sure to check expiration dates. A person who never has to use their epi-pen may be in danger if it gets too old.
