Question:

Fair skin + bad sunburn= skincancer!! Please help, Im scared!?

I am 14, and I have extremley light skin that does not tan whatsoever, and yesterday when i applied sunblock, I missed a major spot on the left side of my neck...its now really red, and almost scaly-like. It hurts...bad. I've been burned before, its so hard for me not to...and Im very, very scared of getting skin cancer. Please help!

Answers:

It is unlikely that you have any skin cancer at your age. However, what damage you do now can cause skin cancer in the future. The scaly-like part of your sunburn is most likely where the burnt skin will peel off. Apply some lotion to help with the dryness, and avoid being out in the sun for awhile. When you do spend time in the sun, take your time while applying your SPF. Be sure to choose the correct SPF for the amount of time you will be spending in the sun. And reapply after swimming or heavy perspiration. I know it is a pain (I am fair skinned too), but my mom and grandfather have had skin cancer, and it is not a pleasant thing to have. So protect your skin now while you are still young and avoid having cancer in the future!
