Acting differently?!

Question:

Acting differently?

my mother came off the breathing machine in icu, she had a heart attack, she had it on for around three weeks, well, she is finally off ( thank god) but....she is acting strangely, I asked the nurse and she said it takes awhile for patients to get back to normal. My mom is not talking which I understand but she does'nt seem to understand us very well and looks so dazed. I just want her back, is she going to get better?

Answers:

She will become herself with some time. Any kind of tough surgery with post-op support will temporarily change someone's personality. It has a lot to do with the anasthesia and a little to do with the breathing machine. It's a shock to the system and the brain and this is your mom's brain's attempt to put things into order as a result of the shock.
The clinical term is post surgical psychosis and it's very common. Along with the stress of the operation, anasthesia and post-op support, the drugs given to your mom to help her heal build up in the system since she's not able to be active. You general see pretty fast improvement after she is up and able to get around and gets out of the hospital. Her personality may still seem a bit off for a week or so but it does improve pretty quickly after she's out of the situation that has her body stressed.
My dad was in a similar situation and he wasn't himself at all in the hospital. A week later, he was adjusted to being out of there and his body was able to process and handle his medication better as he was up and around and he become his old self in about a week.
In the meantime, try to be patient and understanding. Try not to show too much concern to your mom about it as she doesn't realize she's acting any differently. It will get better and it's very common after major surgery. Just try to be supportive and not be too worried about it.
