Chet, is a traumatic pneumothorax the same as a tension pneumothorax?!

Question:

Chet, is a traumatic pneumothorax the same as a tension pneumothorax?

I haven't heard of tension in the description before. I am just learning the coding to work in a medical office and am not very familiar with the terminology used, yet. Thank you for your answer, it gives me some place to start looking.

Answers:

A traumatic (trah-mah-tik) pneumothorax (new-mo-thor-aks) is the collapse of all or part of a lung. It happens when you have an injury that allows air into the area between the lung and the chest wall. The lung deflates because the air between the lung and the chest wall prevents the lung from filling up with air when you take a breath. ICD: 860 TRAUMATIC PNEUMOTHORAX AND HAEMOTHORAX.

Tension pneumothorax is the accumulation of air under pressure in the pleural space. This condition develops when injured tissue forms a 1-way valve, allowing air to enter the pleural space and preventing the air from escaping naturally. Arising from numerous causes, this condition rapidly progresses to respiratory insufficiency, cardiovascular collapse, and, ultimately, death if unrecognized and untreated. Favorable patient outcomes require urgent diagnosis and immediate management.

To know the ICD codes you need to be more specific in regards to tension pneumothorax.

In simple words, tension pneumothorax is a natural phenomenon and traumatic pneumothroax is injury to lungs caused external forces.
