Sunscreen causes skin cancer?!

Question:

Sunscreen causes skin cancer?

I read several articles that say that the ingredients in sunscreen might actually be carcinogenic because they absorb into the skin and promote free radicals. And apparently ultraviolet rays promote vitamin D which reduces cancer by 77%... So should I wear or not wear sunscreen? Another question is about Neutrogena's new helioplex technology. It stabilizes and combines oxybenzone and avobenzone. Does that mean that these chemicals are now prevented from producing free radicals?

I read that the micronized versions of might not be safe as well.

Answers:

Yes, you should use sunscreen. UVA rays from the sun damage the skin cell DNA and causes mutations that are responsible for the development of skin cancers and premature ageing.

However, you should avoid chemical sunscreens and stick with physical sunscreens. So look out for ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Some of the newer formulations use micronized versions so they do not leave a pasty sheen on the skin's surface like some of the original formulatons.

As for vitmain D, you only need about 5-10 minutes of sunlight a day to get the adequate amounts of vitamin D your body needs. And you can also get this vitamin D whilst wearing a sunscreen. You can get vitamin D from supplements and several food sources aswell, so there is no excuse for people not to be careful in the sun.
