Has anyone heard of thyroid radiation and has had it done?!

Question:

Has anyone heard of thyroid radiation and has had it done?

Answers:

I think you are talking about radioactive iodine. I have only had it for a scan, not for the purpose of killing thyroid cells.

It can be used to diagnose thyroid cancer, which is what I had. Also after my thyroid was removed, they did this also. I have turned down the higher dose use to kill cells. Sometimes people who are hyperthyroid (over active) have this treatment too.

With high doses, you may need to stay overnight in a hospital until radiation levels go down. For 3-8 days depending on dose you should avoid small children and pregnant women, and do not spend more than 1 hour in close proximity to any one. During this time you should drink plenty of fluids and shower multiple times a day.
