my grandma is diabetic she is my mothers side of the family so i was wondering what my chance of getting diabetes is!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
First, it depends if she is type 1 or type 2!.!.!. heres the difference: First off, there are two types of diabetes!.

Type 1 (aka juvenile diabetes)-- Is caused solely by genetics!. While you might not necessarily have a family history of it, it is still genetic!. It is not caused by weight gain or eating habits!. Though it is often referred to as juvenile diabetes and usually occurs in children, teens, and young adults, it can develop at any age!. In a type 1 diabetic, their body's pancreas does not produce insulin or produces very little!. (insulin is a hormone which is released when you eat and keeps your blood sugar levels balanced!.) Treatment is usually daily insulin injections or using an insulin pump along with carefully monitoring your carbohydrate intake!.

Type 2 (aka adult onset diabetes)-- Is usually brought on by obesity or unhealthy eating habits!. Contrary to the name, in the last several years due to the increase in childhood obesity, it has been showing up in kids as well as adults!. Type two diabetes is when the pancreas still produces insulin, but the body does not know how to use it!. Treatment is usually a medication in pill form which helps the body absorb and use the insulin it produces!.

!.!.!.so if she takes insulin shots, she is probably type 1!. If she takes a pill, it's probably type 2

If she is type 2, then it is still possible for you to get diabetes, but not as likely!. Even if she is type 1, just because she has diabetes doesn't mean you will get it!. Yes, you are slightly more at risk than the general population, but it's nothing huge!.

Here are some symptoms to keep an eye out for:

* Frequent urination
* Excessive thirst
* Extreme hunger
* Unusual weight loss
* Increased fatigue
* Irritability
* Blurry vision

If you start to experience these symptoms, you should talk to your doctor and have tests run!. The preliminary tests are very basic!. One is a "2-hour post-prandium blood sugar" test!.!.!. basically, you eat a meal, 2 hours later, they check your blood sugar via a finger prick!.!.!. TA-DA all done!.!.!. you could actually do this at home with your grandma's meter, but just make sure to use a different lancet (the needle part) They may also do a glucose tolerance test which is a little more in depth!.

Like I said, there may be a slightly higher chance of you developing diabetes, but nothing major!.!.!. I've got relatives on my mom and dad's side with diabetes and my younger sister has it, but I don't!. Just maybe check your blood sugar from time to time and keep an eye out for the warning signs!.

You can also visit www!.jdrf!.org for more information!. They have a lot of good info and a support team who you can email with questions and will get back to you within 48 hours!. www!.diabetes!.org is another great site with a lot of info as well!.

I hope this helped!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Younger sister has been type 1 diabetic for over 10 years!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's a pretty good chance if it runs in your family!. Just be sure to check yourself often and look for symptoms of polyuria (frequent urination) polydipsia (frequent thirst) and symptoms of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) are shaky when going a long period without eating, confusion, disoriented, and dizziness!. My Father and Grandmother are both Type 2 diabetic, I am hypoglycemic, which is pretty much the opposite of diabetes but can turn into it, and my daughter who is 7 is type 1 diabetes!. Type 1 diabetes can be caused by any virus which is how my Daughter's Doctor thinks how she got it!. Type 1 is juvenile diabetes (kids are diagnosed with this type)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

50% if you keep low normal weight!.
