Would you call the doctor now?!

Question:

Would you call the doctor now?

I posted a couple days ago a question on how hard it is to catch a staph infection. I have found some articles about staph from food causing vomiting and diarrhea. My daughter has had diarrhea now for 2 days, this morning she got up throwing up and her throw up looked about like her poo. So first, is it normal for vomit to look like poo? and would her being around a girl with staph cause this? She is 5 years old and hasn't complained of really anything else bothering her, just her stomach. I'm just not sure what to do. Call the doctor now? or wait and see if it blows over. I'm giving her fluids right now. Help please?

Answers:

she should be evaluated within the next 24 hours by her pediatrician or the nearest urgent care.

children dehydrate very quickly when having diarrhea and vomiting and since it's been two days with the diarrhea and she's now vomiting-she needs to be looked at.

if she was throwing up stool (which can happen with a bowel obstruction-the colon gets blocked so the stool goes up the digestive tract and it's vomited out), it would have the distinct smell of a bowel movement (and it's a smell you will never forget). if this is happening-get her to an er right away.

if her vomit is yellowish-brown in color then she could be throwing up bile (the liquid your liver produces). this happens with severe dehydration. this also requires an immediate trip to the er.

make that appt to get her seen today and try giving her some pedialyte (if she can keep it down). you can find this at any local drugstore-it's an electrolyte solution designed for kids with vomiting and diarrhea.

doesn't sound like staph-she would be deathly ill. she could have a nasty case of food poisoning which will have to run it's course but she should still be seen.

hope she feels better soon!!
