Question:

My dad is coughing up blood. He spent 8 days in the hospital and they (so far) found nothing wrong. Any ideas?

He had a heart attack at the end of April. He's doing well, but had some problems with bloodthinners. Recently in the last month he started coughing up blood. We took him to the hospital because it didn't go away. He was there for 8 days. They did an MRI, CAT scan, XRAYS, BLOOD WORK, everything came out fine so far. He even had a broncialscope (sp?) done. They found out where the blood is coming from, but didn't really know why. They took him off Coumadin, and lowered his dose of Asprin to a baby asprin. He is also taking fish oil. His cough seems to be worse in the morning and and night, but okay during the day. Sometimes it's red blood, and sometimes it's dark (the old blood). He's been through so much and now this! We need some answers. The family thinks that he was on too many blood thinners that broke some blood vessels in his lungs. Now, when he coughs he aggrivates them and bleeds. The doctors sent him home and said if he's still doing it in 8 wks., more tests.

Answers:

Typically people who are coughing up blood are suspected of having TB. But since your dad is also on blood thinners that could also be a culprit. If he's on the blood thinners and really doesn't need to be it could be like what your family suspects. Did they test him for tb? I doubt thats it, I think it was the blood thinners but to be safe, if they didn't test him, have him tested.
