How do antiseizure medications effect the brain?!

Question:

How do antiseizure medications effect the brain?

does anybody know what antiseizure medications do to stop seizures from occuring? In other words how do they work?

Answers:

They increase the seizure threshold by increasing inhibitory activity. They work in other ways as well. There are many classes of anti-epileptics. There are benzodiazepines and phenobarbital which work at the GABA receptors. There is phenytoin (dilantin) and carbamazepine (tegretol) which work by stabilizing the inactivated state of sodium channels thereby making it less likely for an action potential to occur. There is Vaproic Acid (Depakote) which also works at the GABA receptors. It inhibits the breakdown of GABA and GABAergic compounds.
